A Day in the Life…

Calling all Prefrosh! My name is Matthew Tran and I am a freshman in Davenport, which is obviously the best residential college on campus. YDN says so. Even look at freshman Olympics last weekend. What better way to end Freshman Olympics than to OWN EVERY OTHER COLLEGE AND TO TOTALLY HUMILIATE PIERSON BY STEALING THEIR FLAG (we got DQed, but that’s I could go on). Oh I’m sorry you wanted to know about my life? Sorry I thought it was time for FACTS. Davenport greatness aside let me welcome you child-ren into a(n) (a)typical day of a Yalie.

7:00 A.M. Waking up in the morning… I go back to sleep

9:30 A.M. My circadian rhythm wakes me up faster than my alarm clock, but I digress. Get fresh. Do some unfinished Chinese homework while my wall of Chinese characters stare ominously over my head. I go to my Freshman Organic Chemistry class. Yes I have a class at 10:30 A.M. Crazy late right? Not if it’s on science hill. My 10:30 class eventually, instead of feeling late, felt like it was way too early, but getting up to listen to McBride may be always worth it.

11:35 A.M. Arrive exactly on time to Chinese class (unfortunately my Orgo class and Chinese class are on opposite sides of Yale – many Yalies opt for bike like moi, but beware, I forgot how expensive bikes went; I think my wallet has bulimia – the more I put in the less I have next time I check)

12:30 A.M. Time to get my nom on in the fabulously southern colonial style dining hall of Davenport. It’s gorgeous. Today was relaxing. I grabbed a YDN paper and read about how Davenport rocked Freshman Olympics, but anything can happen during lunch from a random conversation with a friend that may last more than 2 hours to watching a rap battle on politics.

1:00 P.M. I make myself privy with Jane Austen, especially living a gothic setting. In my English Seminar we talk about books from Pride and Prejudice to Lolita. The class is called “Passing Judgment.” I promise I’m not judgmental.

2:30 P.M. Kicking it in my dorm and relaxing for a bit and talking to my suitemates. For about an hour or more I’m just running errands (This is when I wish I still had ma rents).

5:15 P.M. Until this time I was doing some Math and Chinese homework, but at this time I meet up with my Chinese partner. This is when we just talk about whatever for twenty-five minutes. Did you know people in China love Yalies?

5:45 P.M. Meet up with some friends at Berkley to grab a meal. To this day I can claim I’ve been to every single dining hall (yes even in a place far far away called TD). I’m a bit partial to Davenport =) Berkley’s also good though.

7:00-9:00 P.M. I try to cram in as much homework as possible before this time, which is inevitably orgo section! At least the TA’s are funny.

9:00 P.M IM time aka dodgeball! Great way to relax or an hour is to just play IM’s. They are so much fun. Just do it.

10:30 P.M. Take a long awaited and most treasured shower. Seriously long showers are the best – best time to just think…

11:00 P.M. – 4:00 A.M. Generally this is my homework time and snack time before I finally hit the sack and unwind. There is such a great satisfaction to lie in bed satisfied after every “Yale” day.

Repeat the next day. Oh Lupe Fiasco is coming on one of my typical Yale days. NBD.
