Join Relasians (AASA, JASU, and more) for Relay for Life!

Yale Relay for Life will take place from Friday, April 20th, 6pm to Saturday, April 21st, 6am at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium tracks. Relay For Life is an amazing experience! There will be food, music, and games and entertainment (Bouncy Castle!). More importantly, there will be old friends and new friends making laps and laughing the night away. Most importantly, you will be having a great time for a great cause.

Two $1,000 scholarships for restaurant workers and children of restaurant workers are available from the Shui Kuen and Allen Chin Scholarship, a program of the Asian Pacific Fund. The scholarship, founded in 2005, honors the values of Detroit restaurant owners Shui Kuen and Allen Chin through supporting the education aspirations of children of workers in the Asian/Pacific Islander food service industry in the U.S.

Eligibility criteria are:

• Self or parent currently or formerly employed at an Asian-owned or Asian cuisine restaurant
• Community advocacy and social justice work on behalf of Asian American, immigrant, gay and lesbian and/or other progressive causes
• Grade level: Incoming freshman or current, full-time undergraduate at a four-year college or university in 2012-13
• Minimum GPA: 3.0
• Financial need

Completed application includes:

• Application, including common application and additional academic and career questions
• Essays
• Most recent transcript(s) of grades (including grading scale); unofficial transcripts are OK
• Resume (work experience, school activities, family responsibilities, community service, honors and awards)
• Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is a from a current teacher or professor

National CAPACD is seeking interns for the 2012 Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.

Throughout the year, National CAPACD provides a pipeline for emerging leaders who are committed to a career in AAPI community development and advocating for social justice.  Interns learn about public policy issues impacting AAPI communities and gain hands-on experience addressing housing and community development issues.  Students are often enrolled in a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs including ethnic studies, public policy, urban planning, public health and education.

Volunteer in rural China this summer for libraries and reading education

Dream Corps is recruiting about 65 international volunteers to participate in its 2012 Summer Volunteer Program in rural schools (township elementary or middle schools) and villages of China. Volunteers will take part in activities that include:

• Establishing and developing libraries: decorations, cataloging books, electronic cataloging system set-ups, and library policy making.
• Reading programs: “Library Month”, “Reading Aloud”, “Science and Reading”, English Reading, and crafts.
• Understanding and learning from locals: communicating with the local teachers, home visits, community research, and promoting reading in the community.

The program consists of 4 days of training in Beijing, 3 weeks of volunteer work on assigned volunteer sites, and 3 days concluding forum in Beijing.

The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) will be held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, June 18 to August 10, 2012. Students complete a full academic year of language study over the eight-week session. Instruction tailored for heritage language students is offered for Filipino, Hmong, Khmer, Lao, and Vietnamese. Scholarship competitions are now open. The application deadline to be considered for a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship or a Heritage Language Award is February 15, 2012. The application deadline to be considered for a Tuition Scholarship is April 16, 2012.
